Hi Arnaud, I definitely wouldn't want anywhere near 2500 kg of strain on it. Considering that full throttle would put circa 300 kgf on it, and having the line lead aft to a cleat on the stern would pull the majority of that tension along the length of the toerail, I'm confident that I'll never break the extrusion or its stainless steel fasteners. I've been using this setup for a while now with no problems... We're looking forward to the mighty Rhone when we get to that stage! Best regards, Chris 👍

@@SailingBritaly Having the force lengthwise to the toerail is at best. But imagine not paying attention, and hanging the boat on it in a lock...

That would not be good, but then again I wouldn't want to do that with a midship cleat either (factory installed or otherwise)...

@@SailingBritaly Yes, you don't want to do this with any cleat. But still it happens. And btw, the mid cleat is widely used in locks as only connection.

Hi Jan, we draw circa 1.65 m in salt water, so taking into consideration my tools (and the girls' shoes!) we may draw closer to 1.70 in fresh water... The route we took is difficult due to siltation reducing the charted depths. I believe getting to the Med is doable with a 1.85 draft, but the route should be chosen almost totally on the deepest options available. There are much larger waterways from the North Sea to the Med, so I would definitely take those rather than do the off-the-beaten-track route we took. It's great fun but it's also an adventure and gets stressful - especially due to concerns about hitting something hard with the keel in shallow sections. Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 👍

Hi there! Our planned route changed due to depth limitations imposed by VNF. Our draft is 1.65 m in salt water, but considering how much stuff we have on board (tools!) and factoring in the fresh water buoyancy difference it may be closer to 1.70 m. Canal tax type permits were needed in both Belgium & France. They are cheap considering how much maintenance the canals & rivers require for navigation. CEVNI qualification is required, although we haven't had to show it to anyone. There are some books available to download online, as well as printed books. Michael E. Hi Henri, hope you're well. :-) We should have added about 200 hours to the engine by the time we get to the Med, which is nothing considering how many times I've forgotten to turn the power off to the engine panel and added up to 24 extra hours to the clock for no reason!... 😂 We will go down the Rhone and Navy Service is one option we've looked at.
